Firsts

Firsts are always big. First birthdays are HUGE. For the parents really, the kiddo has no idea that the day is any different from the previous or the next one. But yes, for parents, first birthdays are big. There is such a sense of achievement that comes along with it. ‘Yes, an entire year has passed and we didn’t completely absolutely fail!’ minor fails, of course, but in the grand scheme of things, she’s a breathing, eating, walking, sleeping 1 year old and we helped get her there. Hip hip hooray!

And of course, there was a party. We love a good party and all that goes with it, the planning, the crafting, the sewing, the cooking. And yet again, Molly really had no. i. dea. Ha! But it felt like the celebration that we as parents needed, a little pat on the back for a year of hard graft.

The day began with cake which Molly seemed to deem as the most extraordinary idea. There was lots of…’really??’ expressions and ‘I can do this??’ faces but she got there in the end and demolished the token cupcake!

And then there were presents. LOTS of presents. What an incredibly loved and lucky little lady she is.

One of her faves was this cuddly thing… we call him Spike.

That evening consisted of much cooking and last minute sewing to get everything in order for the party. It really doesn’t pay to have such high ceilings when there are so many banners and garlands to hang! Sorry Jake! But the hard worked paid off and the place looked suitably festive and oh so cheery. We had a big snow storm and the skies were grey which did not make for good indoor photo taking (boo for winter birthdays!).

Molly was joyful and content throughout the whole event. From excited pictures before her friends arrived…

to anxiously waiting for the first guest…

…she did not stop all afternoon. She is a blur in every photo!

Until the cake that is. Yes, the cake! A true marvel. From the creative hands of Molly’s Oma, Wendy and flown across the Atlantic in a suitcase, came this beautiful toadstool with Molly swinging underneath. Wendy will have to make Molly’s cake every year now as there is no way that I’m every going to be able to create anything as incredible and as yummy as that! Mmmm…

So we ate and drank and reveled in good cheer and celebrated the beautiful, crazy, delightfully cheeky and wonderful Molly Jane. We sang happy birthday and ate cake until out bellies ached. What a truly spectacular way to celebrate.
